Another one written from a source beyond ordinary consciousness: I attended a weekend songwriting workshop in which we would put ourselves into contact with archetypes, then sit down and write without thinking. This looked like a disjointed jumble of thoughts, then a melody showed up to string it all together and voila! It was a song, after all. The ‘winds of grace’ lyric I added later: it’s a quote I read from an Indian guru, I forget who. More good luck: My brother Neal added the part where the women come in and sing the refrain quietly and it builds from there and I start doing my ‘Hey Jude’ shtick. I thought it went on too long, but then I started singing the ‘You’re gonna see it/When you believe it’ line while listening to the rough mixes, went back to the studio and added that part and the song wasn’t too long any more.
